A Family Run Girls Camp for 4 Generations
Patty Lifter is the fourth generation Director of Camp Pinecliffe. Growing up in a camping family, it’s not surprising that over her 25 years at camp, Patty has held numerous positions. In addition to her summers as a camper, Patty has worked as a Bunk Counselor, Senior Bunk Counselor, Waterfront Instructor, Program Director, and Staff Director. Patty also spent several summers working for other summer camps, providing her with a well-rounded understanding of the camping industry. All of these experiences led to Patty becoming Director of Camp Pinecliffe in 1990.
Before joining Pinecliffe full-time, Patty spent several years teaching at Columbia Grammar and Prep School in New York City. She lives in NYC during the year with her husband, Mark, and their son, Jack. Patty attended Ohio University in Athens, OH, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism.
Sue came to Pinecliffe as a camper from the summers of 1940 through 1947. She later returned to Pinecliffe in the 1950s as a counselor, and then, in 1959, became Director alongside her mother, Helen “Hammie” Rosenthal. Sue attended Hobart William and Smith College in Geneva, New York and has been a fixture at Pinecliffe for over 50 years.
Jimmy was destined to be part of the Pinecliffe family long before he and Sue met as teenagers at dance lessons. Jim’s mother, Marjorie, was a camper during Pinecliffe’s first summer and his sister, Ann, was a camper in the 1940s. Jim has spent over 20 years working as camp’s Financial Administrator.
One of the greatest thrills in my life was seeing my daughter love her Pinecliffe experience as much as I did. If there was anything more special than my own Pinecliffe years, it was the opportunity to watch my daughter grow up and thrive at Pinecliffe, where the unique traditions are preserved from generation to generation.
I cherished every Visiting Day and Mother/Daughter Weekend, which also meant seeing so many alumnae whose daughters, like my own, had fallen in love with Pinecliffe. Although my daughter has joined the alumnae ranks now too, Pinecliffe will always remain part of our lives.
